Slay-A-Thon is a fan based benefit for The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Illinois. Fans of Joss Whedon attend an all-day Buffy the Vampire Slayer marathon full of pop culture goodness and raise money to grant wishes to kids with life-threatening conditions. As the creator of this event, I’m often asked, “Why Buffy?”
Buffy was chosen to share the concept of a girl who is strong instead of a victim. When the show premiered in 1997, girls in television and film were often portrayed as weak and vulnerable. Buffy stood out for her strength and heart. Every week, “the chosen one” and her friends battled real-life monsters while saving the world from fictional demons. Buffy’s struggles as a young woman, a daughter, a friend, a significant other, and a slayer gave a sense of empowerment to viewers.
Our event is for fans with the hearts to give to an amazing charity. Before the event, attendees collect donations from friends, family, and colleagues. At the event, we host incredible live and silent auctions, which include donations from stars in Joss Whedon’s collection of shows and other cult hits like The Walking Dead, Bates Motel, iZombie, and more.
Slay-A-Thon is a unique chance to do good while having fun and making friends who share your favorite TV shows and interests. We have always had the support of the cast members of Buffy, Angel, Firefly and Dollhouse. We’ve even been lucky enough to have cast members appear at our event and communicate with attendees on Twitter.
After 14 years, Slay-A-Thon is an example of how Buffy the Vampire Slayer had the power to do good in the real world. Last year alone, attendees raised more than $30,000 for the foundation and granted the grandest wishes of three kids in need. In the same way that Buffy empowered viewers, we’re proud to say our efforts empower children to feel strong and not weak, survivors and not victims, while making the most of the life they’ve been given,
So register on our homepage and get those donations like a slayer! Remember what Buffy said:
Buffy: You have to take care of each other. You have to be strong. Dawn, the hardest thing in this world — is to live in it. Be brave. Live…for me. (Season 5, Episode 22, “The Gift”)
All The Best,
