In 2008, I was introduced to Buffy the Vampire Slayer by a friend, and I was hooked. After that, I became a TV series junkie by watching and loving all of Joss Whedon’s shows and some others. A friend later found out about the Slay-A-Thon, an event of all things Buffy. But when my friend found out about it, I had not even finished the show yet. I was on season 4 getting ready to go into 5, so I didn’t even know if I should go. I didn’t want things spoiled for me. But that changed when I found out what the event is really for.
It’s for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, something that I feel very strongly about and that is close to my heart. It was the Make A wish Foundation that made my wish come true for me when I was sick. You see, when I was 4 ½ years old, I was diagnosed with ALL leukemia, a cancer that infects the blood and the immune system, making it impossible to hang with kids or even go to school in fear of getting something I could not fight off. It was a very hard time for me having to be in the hospital, not being able to do much.
Then Make-A-Wish came along and offered to give me anything that I wanted, which was to go to Walt Disney World. They were so great and even let me stay in a house next to a Disney club house where you could have breakfast with Mickey and friends. They also let me go to the park, along with other parks, for a whole week. (Getting to skip the lines was EPIC.) I got to ride so many rides and do so many things. But the best part about it was getting to spend that time with my mom and dad, something that I will never forget.
Eight years later, I can say that contributing to Slay-A-Thon and giving back is my way of telling the Make-A-Wish Foundation thank you for all they did for me. Most of all, I’m grateful to help a child feel the way that I did, giving them some time and memories with their family that they will never forget.
I think that anyone that likes any Joss Whedon show even just a little bit should come. Giving anything that you can to help out is appreciated, and I promise you will have fun and make friends that are as close as family. I’ll be there to make sure of it.
