“Have you heard of an event called Slay-A-Thon?”
In the Spring of 2013, I had became friends with Joey, a fellow Buffy fan. I was excited to finally find someone with the same passion for Buffy that I had. He asked me that question. And unfortunately, I had not. He told me what he had heard about the event, and sent me the Facebook event link. He too, had not been but had always wanted to go. We decided that we would go together. I waited with anticipation for June to come.
June 15th finally arrived! We made our way into the city, not knowing what to expect. Asking each other questions like “Do you think they do a Sing-a-long to Once More with Feeling?” “Do you think there will be a celebrity guest?” “What episodes do you think they will play?” “Will they have Buffy merchandise for sale?”
We park, and enter Dave and Busters. First in site is a Slay-A-Thon sign featuring Nicholas Brendon. When we walk in, we can’t believe that he is just sitting at a table! He wasn’t hiding behind a curtain or waiting in another area until photo ops. He was casually sitting and talking with fellow guests. How cool?!? Of course, we both got his autograph and photograph later on. I couldn’t believe how nice and generous he was! He was my first celebrity that I had really met. And, definitely has not been my last since first attending this event.
The event exceeded my expectations. Of course, there was Sing-a-long to Once More with Feeling! Was there Buffy merchandise? There was and then some. There were Buffy, Angel, Firefly, and even other Pop Culture items. There were autographs, games, books, tshirts, jewelry and more. There were items for sale at the donations table, and there were silent and live auctions. I definitely went home with a bunch of goodies even though I didn’t have much money to spend. And, it helped to know that they money I was spending was going to a great cause.
12 hours flew by. I was sad that the event was over, but I had a blast! I met some awesome new friends, and couldn’t wait to come back next year. I was amazed at how this event was put together. I extended my hand forward to Kelly and offered to help with next year’s event.
Now 4 years later, I am part of the Slay-A-Thon crew. I love being able to help with an event that I hold so dear to my heart. I love everything about Slay-A-Thon, from the people who attend, to the wishes it helps grant, the activities held and to the overall atmosphere at the event. Slay-A-Thon is one of the few things that I really look forward to. My anticipation grows and grows each year waiting for Slay-A-Thon to come around. And, I am thankful to be given the opportunity to be involved in this amazing event from start to finish.
